Celebrating being fit & fabulous at 60

Celebrating feeling fit and fabulous at 60

Well today is the big day!  At 10pm on the 23rd August, 1957 I was born.  I am 60 years old and I’m celebrating being fit and fabulous!  Like most people, I’m looking at myself and my life and can’t reconcile that the way I feel is associated with having been alive for 60 years.

My friends, The Saturday Sisters, gave me a birthday card which I thought was so positive and certainly reflected how I feel about ME.  I just love what it says on the front because that is exactly how I feel.

Last Sunday, my family and friends gathered to celebrate my 60th birthday and it was such a thrill to have my nearest and dearest around me.  My lovely daughter, Rachel and my darling husband, Mike put so much love and effort into making my day so special and one to be remember.  I will be writing a special post about my birthday celebrations but here is a sneak peak of some photos.

It only seems like yesterday that I was turning 50 and now 10 years later I’m celebrating another milestone in my life.  Life is good but I work at it by exercising regularly, eating a well balanced diet most of the time and making sure that I keep connected with family and friends.

I think I’ve achieved more in the last 10 years than ever before and I know that I won’t be slowing down any time soon.  I’m feeling good physically and mentally and so grateful for the life that I have.

My one regret is that it took until I was 50 to realise my potential and to actually start to like myself for the person I am.  Once I accepted who I was, my attitude changed for the better and I enjoyed life so much more.  I even started running and ran my first full marathon at the age of 55.  That experience taught me that anything is possible if you want it badly enough.

My life, like everyone has had it’s good and bad times but I cannot complain because my life is good! I have a loving family, I learn from my darling grandson each day about enjoying the simple things in life.  I have wonderful friends, especially my Saturday Sisters and I am enjoying giving back to the community through my volunteer work.

I am proud of myself for taking the step and starting my blog to encourage women to live the best version of themselves. I’ve met some wonderful women through blogging and it has been a rewarding and positive experience.  These wonderful women are all 50+ and are also discovering who they are beyond the ’empty nest’.

In October, my husband and I will be taking off on another adventure and visiting Spain and Italy.  I can’t wait and we are now busy making final plans.  Despite the recent tragic events in Barcelona we are not deterred as life must go on and we must not live in fear.

So today as I celebrate my life and feeling fit and fabulous at 60, I would love to encourage you all to live life, make changes if you don’t feel happy and be thankful.  Life can be so good – you just have to grab onto it and go!

Wow, how wonderful. Happy birthday! I know lots of people who say the exact thing – they feel like 30 but are 50, 60, even 70. Age is something that should be celebrated – it comes with so much life experience and so many achievements.
I hope you have a wonderful time in Spain and Italy. They’re really beautiful countries and have a lot to offer.

I wonder what you will get up to in the next decade. It sounds like it will be active, vibrant & exciting fun times ahead. Enjoy Spain & Italy. 🙂

Thank you so much Estelle and yes I wonder what the next decade will bring. We are looking forward to Spain & Italy, despite the recent events in Barcelona and the Island of Ischia. You can’t stop doing things because of fear of what might happen. Thanks for stopping by and have a beautiful day xx

First of all Happy Birthday and yes the time seems to go by so quickly. I wish in my years, that I had stayed as active as I was in my teens. Alas such was not the case, so now I’m working on becoming fit again. It’s a long row to hoe, but I’m working on it one day at a time.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric August 24, 2017 at 07:32

Hi Olivia, thank you for your kind birthday wishes. I was like you – fit in my younger years then not so fit in my middle years. At 50 that changed and I started running and also had a personal trainer. I feel 30 now even though I’m 60. Just take it one day at a time and a brisk walk can do wonders for mind, body and soul. Have a great day!

Sue you are indeed sizzling and sexy at sixty! I agree with the part of not really working out who you are and what you want out of life until you reach your 50s. This is what happened in my case too. As you know I turned 60 earlier in the year and it took me a while to come to terms with the number. However now I’m fully embracing my sexy sixties!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric August 24, 2017 at 13:18

I’m so pleased you are embracing the ‘sexy sixties’ – I love that term! I have been so fortunate to be surrounded by so much love for my 60th and I am really looking forward to my next decade and what I can achieve. It really is a great time to be alive and I’m so grateful that I’m fit and active enough to enjoy it all. xx

You inspire those of us who are not far behind you in our 50’s and I can’t tell you how much I’ve appreciated your friendship and support through this whole blogging odyssey! Congrats on another milestone – and I bet you are hanging out for that cruise – it will be beautiful over there and a well deserved holiday for you both xx

I love this Sue and your words remind me of the saying ‘Youth is wasted on the young’. At 63 I have never been more inclined to grab hold of life and give it a good shake. There is so much to do and enjoy – just like you do.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric August 24, 2017 at 19:49

What a great saying Jan! I might borrow that. You look fabulous and there is so much life left for us to live isn’t there! x

Sue, I missed your big day but here is wishing you many more exciting and productive years. Your life journey mirrors my own in so many ways, as I am just a few years ahead of you. While aging is inevitable, becoming old is optional and I enjoy seeing so many women our age proving that. I believe we all have wisdom worth sharing with each other and those younger than us. Happy birthday and enjoy your trip.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric August 25, 2017 at 15:33

Thank you Aletha and you are so right we all have wisdom worth sharing. I am quite excited about our trip which is certainly coming up fast! Have a beautiful weekend xx

Happy Big 6-0 my dear Aussie friend! Your birthday party looked wonderful and nothing like celebrating it with family and friends. My bro and sis in law both turned 60 a few months ago and hosted a big combined party. I couldn’t make it but hubby did (his brother was the b-day boy). In three years we both turn 60 in October and December, so I’m sure we will host a big combined blow-out! You look wonderful and cheers to another 60 🙂

    • Reply Sue Loncaric August 25, 2017 at 15:35

Hi Terri, thank you! You and hubby will definitely have to start planning a combined party that is for sure! xx

Sue, I’m happy for you! I think the baby boomer generation is the first to have a real problem with aging, whereas previous generations just got on with it and didn’t talk about it. Women I know who are in their 80s seem to have not worried much about it. I have lots of issues with getting older 😀 but then I remind myself that my older sister died of cancer at 48 and would have been thrilled to be coping with aging! I love your attitude! Wishing you continued health and happiness.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric August 26, 2017 at 14:12

Thank you Jean and I’m sorry to hear of the loss of your sister at such a young age. That is definitely a lesson in living each day to the full isn’t it? Thank you for your beautiful wishes and I hope you have a great weekend xx
