Change happens every day even when we don’t realise it is happening. However, most of us like our comfort zone and don’t like the idea of change – especially as we get older. However, embracing change can bring new possibilities and new beginnings. Accepting new opportunities can be exciting and motivating.
Now I’m the first to admit that ‘comfort zones’ can be comfortable and there isn’t anything wrong with that. However, if you are faced with change you will find that your attitude plays an important part in whether you have a positive or negative experience.
Change can be a positive in our lives so instead of fearing change – accept it, embrace it and celebrate it.
Celebrate Change – Don’t Fear It
If you are a regular reader of Sizzling Towards 60 & Beyond, you will have been introduced to my 91 year old mother-in-law, Luisa. Over the last year, Luisa has undergone major changes in her life – turning 90, losing her husband of 70 years and moving to an aged care facility.
However, major changes also occurred in her life almost 70 years ago.
Luisa migrated from Italy and arrived in Australia in 1952 with her husband, Frank, a two year old and a baby. She had no English language skills and a suitcase with all their worldly possessions. After WWII the Italian government ordered all those not born in Italy to leave and as Frank was born in Croatia, they left Luisa’s family in Italy and sailed to Australia – a country they had never heard of. The story is fascinating but one I will share another time.
The success of these two major changes 70 years apart, depended on Luisa’s attitude. Although she feared the unknown country she embraced her new life and worked hard. 70 years later, she feared carrying on after the loss of her life partner and also moving from her home. Of course being 90 major changes would be a difficulty but since moving to the aged care facility she has a new lease on life and is happy and contented. She has embraced being part of the community and attending all the activities and at this rate I will be organizing her 100th birthday!
