Best of Boomer Blogs January 2018

It is again my turn to host the Best of Boomer Blogs with thoughts on life from wise and wonderful Boomers.  I enjoy being part of this group because of the variety of topics and also the people who aren’t just sitting around waiting for life to happen.  This week’s offerings are again great reading and learning for us all but don’t forget to also visit each blogger and some of their other posts on their websites.

For the travellers or those of us who would love to travel……

Meryl Baer of Six Decades and Counting continued her travels in the South, delaying a return to the cold, gray North she calls home. She enjoyed a week touring and eating in Charleston, South Carolina,  Doing the Charleston, and also explored neighboring islands. She discovered an impressive force of nature, a 400-year-old live Angel Oak tree that reminds us, as it soars in all its majesty after surviving the ravages of nature and man, of the strength of our will to survive.

Rebecca Olkowski with BabyBoomster.com went to the Travel Adventure Show in Los Angeles and learned some great travel tips from experts like Rick Steves and Patricia Schultz. Read her takeaways because you may want to use them on your next trip. Travel Adventure Show Takeaways and Tips from Experts

Are you looking to move to a new home or area to start your retirement or ‘The Lifestyle Change’ as I call it?

For some reason this spring Laura Lee Carter, one of the “New Old Farts,” keeps flashing back to four years ago when she and her husband Mike were still living in suburbia in Fort Collins, preparing to move down south to rural Colorado to build their solar home. Here’s an excerpt from her memoir of that experience called: Why we moved to the country to retire.

Read any good books lately?

Tom Sightings never recommends a book on his blog, because quite frankly, a lot of people aren’t readers and don’t really care. But he just finished a book that inspired him to break his rule. So turn the page to Life Is Uncertain to find a book (at only 230 pages) that will shake you to the core, and make you a better person for the experience.

Want to try something new?

Jennifer believes that we should always keep learning and keep trying new things.  Have you ever wanted to study acting with Samuel L. Jackson or Hellen Mirren?  Or learn to cook with Wolfgang Puck or Gorden Ramsey.  Study directing from Ron Howard and writing from Judy Blume and so many more options.  Read How To Study With The Brightest In Masterclass to learn more about how you can learn from the top in their field.

Are you someone who ‘wallow’s or a person who just takes it on the chin and keeps pushing onwards?

We all know someone who seems to “wallow” in loss and grief. At A Healing Spirit, Carol Cassara points out some of the ways “wallowing” is necessary and what to consider if your own active grieving seems to be getting in the way of your life. Carol explains Why wallowing in it is not such a bad thing

Are you up to date with the new Medicare Cards in the U.S.?

Beginning in April, Medicare will start mailing new cards to all Medicare recipients, Rita R. Robison, consumer journalist blogging at The Survive and Thrive Boomer Guide, reports. Instead of having your Social Security number, the new cards will have a unique Medicare number. The cards will be mailed in waves, to different parts of the country, from April 2018 until April 2019. You can check the rollout schedule to get an idea when you may be receiving your card. Read more about it At last: New Medicare cards won’t show your Social Security number

Do we take being grateful for granted?

A couple of weeks ago, I was visiting my MIL at her aged care home.  I was pleasantly surprised to find The Grateful Tree in the foyer.  It was bulging with post-it notes written by residents, family and staff all with thoughs on gratitude.  It brought tears to my eyes reading some of the notes.  After that experience, I’ve written about The Grateful Tree and why you need to plant one.
