Welcome to What’s Been On Your Calendar? 2024! I hope you have had a wonderful month and if you are linking up, I can’t wait to hear about what you’ve been doing. If you don’t blog I’m still interested in what’s been happening with you and encourage you to leave me a comment and tell me your news.
So let’s pause here, go and make yourself a cuppa and take your time reading through what’s been on my calendar? #WBOYC .
August flew by and Spring is finally here in South East Queensland. The last few days have been quite hot so perhaps we have zoomed through Spring and are now into Summer. This is a gorgeous time of year, the days are lengthening, the skies are blue and the sunrises and sunsets are stunning.
Spring is here
After two years of laying dormant, our orchid has finally decided to bloom again. I was excited to see some buds which quickly opened. Everywhere the flowers are blooming and there is always a sense of new beginnings and expectation with a new season, especially Spring. Our early morning Saturday runs are delightful as the weather warms with just the slight hint of a morning breeze.

Birthday celebrations and feeling the love
I celebrated another year around the sun last week and was overwhelmed with the number of birthday wishes and love I received. It prompted me to base my weekly Sparks of Joy post around The Gift of Connection: How Birthday or ‘Just because’ Messages Spread Joy

Connecting with others
Mike and I moved back to Brisbane, two years ago on 12th August. During that time, we’ve undertaken some major renovations of our town house. Now the renos are complete it is time to move out into the world and find some connections within our community. We attended our first Probus meeting during August and we were warmly welcomed by the members of the Chatsworth-Carindale group. Probus provides an exciting opportunity to meet retirees in your local community. If you are retired or semi – retired, you can join a Probus Club and hear interesting speakers, attend monthly meetings and enjoy a wide range of activities such as walking, theatre, coffee groups, lunches and day outings.
The group we have joined has well over 100 members and has been in existence for 25 years so they must be doing something right. Both of us are looking forward to the next meeting and also joining in the social activities on offer.
Family
We celebrated my birthday with a family lunch and it was lovely to have all of my family together in the one place! Our houseguest was Wallis the Pooch and I attended the Book Week Parade for my youngest grandson, Peta Pan (aka Elliot). I love that the children are encouraged to read and dress as a character from a book.

Volunteering
My first experience as a Shero with Share the Dignity and I am so impressed with the generosity of others. Share the Dignity works to make a real, on-the-ground difference to the lives of women, girls and those who menstruate who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness, domestic violence or poverty. They distribute period products to those in need and work to achieve menstrual equity here in Australia. When someone is doing it tough, the last thing on their mind should be dealing with their period.

Podcasting
Another month filled with interviews for the Women Living Well After 50 Podcast. The latest episodes were Love, Eat, Heal – How self-love and conscious eating leads to healing and living well (substack.com) and From Doubt to Do – How to make the shift from Impossible to Possible (substack.com)
Reading
Reading is a passion and during the month I’ve read a range of genres, even science fiction which certainly isn’t a genre I usually reach for. If you are interested, you can read my reviews in my monthly post What’s On Your Bookshelf? – August 2024. What have you been reading lately?
The Living Well Newsletter
A couple of months ago I joined Substack. I had seen other bloggers transferring over or using this as an additional platform. Firstly, I moved my podcast over as they offer a free service. I have now followed with a regular Living Well Newsletter. I’m still deciding whether it will be weekly, fortnightly, monthly or just when I feel I have something to share.
The Living Well This Week Newsletter is where I encourage you to celebrate your vibrant, fulfilling life being a woman over 50. This week, I’m putting the focus on embracing life beyond the numbers—whether it’s age, weight, or any other digits that society uses to define us. So, let’s dive into a world where numbers don’t limit our joy, potential, or sense of self. You can read the full newsletter Embracing Life Beyond the Numbers to live a full and happy lifestyle (substack.com)

Hi, Sue – Your calendar has been action-packed this August with much to celebrate. Your birthday gatherings look lovely, and your grandsons adorable!
Has it been two years already when you moved to Brisbane? Time is defintely speeding past!
I continue to experience much difficulty getting onto Substack (it truly does not like me). But I will continue to try! <3
Hi Sue, you really make the most of each month and show us how life van be lived well despite our advancing years. A lovely post and I can’t believe it’s 2 yrs since you moved up to Brisbane! Have a fabulous September xx
What a wonderful full month.
I have to say, I’ve l;oved watching all the book week kids walking to school over the last few weeks. It’s so gorgeous! Great month for you!
And if you see this Christina Hawkes, I’m still getting blcked off your links.
I love how you and Mike are making such a great life together now you are so settled in the place you have made your own. Great stuff. You do an awesome job of sharing your skills and abilities with many and thank you for being a volunteer where needed. Book week can be fun that is for sure. I think your grandson looked very cute too. How about that orchid…sometimes nature just “waits” to surprise us. Denyse
You’ve had a busy, and I would say joyous month Sue. I love your orchid. One of my favourite times of the year is watching the garden come alive in Spring.
First of all, happy belated birthday Sue! Aren’t those well-wishes and connections so uplifting? Also, I love your orchid and other spring flower photos; they are absolutely beautiful. Thanks as always for hosting the #WBOYC link-up.
Your orchid is stunning! I’m beginning to find my feet on Substack. I’m not sure it will ever replace my blog, but it’s perfect for newsletter-style posts.
Your orchid is beautiful! Look at all that birthday love; that’s wonderful.
What a lovely August you’ve had, Sue. Your orchid flowers and birthday celebration are beautiful. I recently finished “Never Coming Back”, an award-winning crime thriller by Tim Weaver. Thank for for hosting WBOYC and linking up with Weekend Coffee Share. Have a wonderful week ahead!
Happy September, Sue! What glorious moments you’ve had in August! Your birthday celebrations look delightful as you were surrounded by so much love! I appreciate you and your mindset so much as you embrace this stage of life and find the joy around you – it’s a great reminder for me to do the same! 💕
What a lovely month you had! I need to investigate your sub stack account so I can read more in your newsletter.
Hi, Sue! You have definitely had a full month! My flowers are beginning to die out as they weren’t cared for like I do (while I was gone). But, I’m also getting a little tired of the watering anyway. My fall chrysanthemums are blooming which is a little early for them. I still need to look into period products in my community as I know there are many food pantries. But, I’m not sure period products are distributed by anyone. I think that is such a wonderful way to care for others. I didn’t do a monthly recap as I was gone those last two weeks but will link up with you next month!

Your schnauzer is so cute — but I’m biased because I have a handsome schnauzer too. I love their wavy fur.
What a great update Sue!! Loved your photos and all that’s been going on. I was talking to a friend the other day about how if I ever moved to another state/city, I’d have to be sure I joined some type of group or club so I could meet people.
