Are you Thriving or Just Surviving? Podcast

Are you thriving or just surviving?

How do you feel right at this moment?  Happy, contented or unfulfilled and feeling lost?

You have reached the Third Act of Life or as Carl Jung suggests the ‘Afternoon of Life’, but are you making the most of it or just going through the motions each day?  This can be such an exciting time of life, many of us are entering a new phase of life when we stop working full time, the children have flown and we can now concentrate on ourselves.

However, many of us, including myself can struggle with the changes to our lifestyle. We might have retired from work but we haven’t retired from life.  The good news is that this is quite normal and you can find a life that is full if you have the right attitude and give yourself some time to adjust.

It’s time to take a reality check and start thriving because we only get one shot so we better make the most of it.

In this episode of the Women Living Well After 50 Podcast, my guest, Debbie Harris from Deb’s World and I discuss the idea of thriving in life, especially after 60. Deb selected Thrive as her Word of the Year for 2024.

During the episode we discussed:

  • Why Deb selected Thrive as her WOTY
  • What Thriving really means
  • How Deb will implement the word Thrive to guide her in 2024
  • Different ways we can thrive
  • The barriers that stop us from thriving

Hi Sue – I’m loving the 3rd third of life and the time its giving me to do more of what I love and less of what were just obligations and drudge. I always appreciate Deb’s upbeat approach to life, so I’ll be listening to you both this afternoon as I chill out with a jigsaw. Nice to see you back podcasting again. x

HI Leanne, I hope you managed to listen in and enjoyed our conversation. It is always inspiring chatting to Deb. I’m loving the 3rd third of life as well and finding some good balance between ‘doing’ and ‘being’ x

I really enjoyed this! It’s so much fun to hear the voices of the people you “talk” to on blogs! I think Debbie was the perfect person to begin your seventh series!

Thanks Marsha, your comment was lovely! I’m like you and love hearing the ‘voices’ of bloggers rather than just reading their words. I hope you enjoyed our accents, although I dislike hearing my own voice 🙂

    • Reply Sue Loncaric February 14, 2024 at 10:39

Hi Marsha, it is fun hearing people’s voices after seeing them on their blogs. Deb and I are great friends and I think that shines through in the interview. I’m so pleased you enjoyed the podcast. x

Sue, I enjoyed this interview with Deb and can identify completely with her bag organization. I carry a small wallet that travels from bag to bag, depending on the activity I am participating in and I don’t have to think about having the things I need in each bag. They are always packed.

I agree with both of you that ‘regret’ blocks happiness and the key to thriving is to live in the moment and make life fun.

I’m so pleased to hear you have a similar bag organisation Suzanne! I hav a small pouch with the necessities which travels from bag to bag like you do. Also! happy to hear you enjoyed our chat!

Hi Sue and Deb, I watched this podcast yesterday afternoon after I got home from working hard over at Mum’s place. I was sprawled on my bed exhausted and enjoyed listening to you both. It’s the first time I’ve heard your voice Deb! You both did a wonderful job and I love the word THRIVE. I don’t feel that I’m thriving so much right now. I think another ‘impediment’ to thriving is … stressed that are not within our control – like deaths of loved ones, illness, the sort of thing I’m going through right now. However, we can always try and adjust our perspective to help us not dwell and get dragged down by it all. It’s a challenge but important to try and there are ways … little pockets of self care time … a little something to look forward to (I’ve just booked 4 nights at Straddie for hubby and I in early March) to help me to restore and revive somewhat. Great podcast episode – lovely to hear you both and look forward to future episodes! Thanks so much for linking up to #WWWhimsy – have a wonderful weekend coming up! xo

Hi Min, Deb and I are very close despite not living close by. I think that comes across in the podcast and thank you for your kind words. Take care of yourself as you are going through a difficult time at the moment and a trip to Straddie will be just what the doctor ordered. x

    • Reply Debbie February 16, 2024 at 09:35

Thanks Min, I’m so glad you got to watch us chat and hear my voice (I don’t like hearing myself talk) and I completely understand the stresses you are under at the moment – not good for thriving at all! I wasn’t on top of my game when we started our chat but Sue did well to bring me out and being good firneds helped a lot. All the best for some self care moments, sending hugs to you x

I had a couple months of just surviving with dealing with elderly parents and health issues with both mine and my MIL but now that things are settled into a routine… I am working on thriving. I am getting help, I am taking time for myself, I run and I just had the most fun night out with my running friends, eating and laughing!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric February 18, 2024 at 16:55

Hi Mireille, it can be so difficult with elderly parents can’t it? I’m pleased to hear that you are making time for yourself and doing things with friends to bring some fun into your life. Take care. x
