In this article today, Annie discusses ways to be sun safe and still enjoy the outdoors.
7 sun safe tips from skin care experts
Summer is a season to have fun and spend a lot of time in the open outdoors, especially at the beach. But, at the same time, you cannot expose yourself to the sun and not care about adequate protection.
Prolonged exposure can age your prematurely, with fine lines turning quickly into deep-set wrinkles. To look great and enjoy the time spent at the beach, follow the best protection tips from skin care experts.
These are meant to help you protect your skin, reducing the risk of sunburns and premature aging.
#1 Sunscreen
It does not matter if you have oily skin or any other skin type for that matter. You need to use sunscreen every time you go out and especially at the beach, where the exposure is prolonged and more intense. Apart from choosing a sunscreen with high SPF, it is also important to pay attention to how often you apply the product. Spread a generous layer of the skin every hour, and you will be able to enjoy yourself, without worrying about sun damage.
#2 Sunscreen Application
Sunscreen should be applied on the entire body, including on smaller surfaces
When it comes to the application of sunscreen, the general tendency is to concentrate on the larger surfaces of the skin. This is because these are more exposed to the harmful action of UV rays, which means that they are more likely to suffer from sun damage. However, the smaller surfaces of the skin are the ones which get more easily burned, due to the skin being thinner in those areas. So, the next time you go to the beach, apply sunscreen in a generous layer, to your ears, nose, eyelids and top part of the feet & toes.
#3 Shade does not necessarily offer protection from the sun
When the sun becomes too powerful, the majority of us hide under an umbrella, as we believe to be one of the best protection measures we can take. However, this kind of shade does not necessarily offer protection from the sun, because the sun is reflected from other surfaces, such as the water or the sand. For this reason, it is recommended to apply sunscreen, including when you are under the umbrella. The risks of sun damage are the same, as the skin is quite vulnerable to the UV rays being reflected from other surfaces.
#4 Hat & sunglasses, essential beach-going accessories
Even though many people perceive the hat and sunglasses as trendy accessories, these are more than just about fashion. The main purpose is to provide enhanced protection against the damage done by UV rays, especially during the peak hours of the day. It is advisable to choose a hat that has a broad-rim so that it provides coverage for the entire face and reduces the risk of premature skin aging down to a minimum. At the same time, The sunglasses should be tinted, providing adequate protection against UVA and UVB rays.
#5 Avoid using exfoliants
During the summer, you might be tempted to use exfoliants on a regular basis, especially to minimize those unaesthetic neck and chest wrinkles. However, it has been proven that the constant usage of exfoliants and, particularly those that contain glycolic acid, make your skin more sensitive to the action of the sun. If you want to keep the risk of sun damage down to a minimum, avoid using exfoliants, with at least a week before going to the beach.
#6 Choose makeup with SPF
If you are the kind who likes to wear makeup at the beach, you might as well choose one that offers a little bit of additional protection. Mineral-based makeup products are great for summer use, but you have to make sure that adequate SPF is included. Mineral powders have, in general, an SPF of 20, so that you benefit from added protection against sun damage. However, you can find products that offer higher levels of SPF, up to 50. It all depends on the level of protection you want from your makeup.
#7 Enhanced moisturizing during summer days
During the summer, the skin is more prone to dehydration, especially when spending too much time in the sun. For this reason, you can compensate for such problems and reduce the associated risks by wearing moisturizer on a daily basis. Choose a product that is suitable for summer wear and one that is adequate for your skin type. For example, if your skin is prone to excess dryness, choose one that has enhanced moisturizing properties. Do not forget to apply the moisturizer frequently, especially after an entire day spent at the beach.
These are a couple of tips provided by skincare experts, destined to help you protect your skin from sun damage and look better than ever. You should also consider using the Bella Serata from an early age, to maintain the youthful appearance of the skin and keep the signs of skin aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles, at a safe distance.

Thanks for sharing these tips, Annie and Sue. These are all great reminders — especially about the use of exfoliants.

Thank you for attending the #WednesdayAIMLinkParty. I shared your post on Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, and Twitter.
I’m a big believer in moisturizer and using sun screen. I don’t tend to ever have my face exposed to our Australian sun any more – I just wished I’d cottoned on to the damage too much sun does when I was a child and in my early teens – all that sunburn!!!
I can be slack with the sun screen Leanne. LIke you I wish I had not sat out in the sun as much when I was younger and like you I didn’t tan it was Sunburn!!!
Thanks for bringing your post to the Blogger’s Pit Stop last week.
