6 lessons learned BE-ing Busy (in a good way)

July 29, 2022

We are now into the second half of 2022 and of course we all say ‘where has the time gone?’. For me, the last few months have been hectic. I wrote last month in my WOTY post BE-ing aware of Mental Health & Well-being, about stepping back from my Facebook Group and social media and posting less on the blog. Why? I will fill you in before the end of the post, so keep reading 🙂

Being Busy is something many try to avoid in our lives. I see numerous posts about slowing down, (hopefully to appreciate the moment rather than slowing down and stopping living life), making moments count, not taking on too much, living a simpler life and so on. I feel there is a sentiment of being anti-busy but there are times when being busy is good for us. It can make us feel alive, give us a purpose and inspires and motivates us to do more. The only downside is when we are being busy ‘for busy’ sake doing things that rob us of our joy and getting bogged down doing things because we haven’t created the necessary boundaries to maintain a good and healthy balance, especially for our mental health and well-being.

I like to be busy although equally I like my quiet time and getting lost in a good book. Pure indulgence!

In my recent post for our What’s On Your Bookshelf? link up I wrote how studies have shown reading even for 6 minutes tops the list for reducing stress and anxiety. (If you missed the post you can read it here Reading and Relaxation, the perfect remedy for stress and also if you love reading why not link up with us next month and share what you have been reading.)

BE-ing Busy (in a good way)

Over the last month I’ve enjoyed:

Taking extra sessions in the Strong Healthy Women Virtual Studio

Spending time with my grandsons who always bring joy and also learnings. Ethan who is 8 was teaching me about the word ‘Viscosity’ and what it means – I’m not sure I had even heard of the word at that age! It was also fun to learn that Elliot (4) wants to be a firefighter and chef and at the moment Ethan wants to be a Rugby Player (his future occupations change almost weekly!)

Discussions with my Online Book Club which I always enjoy. I love that we read the same book but have different interpretations and thoughts. We are currently reading Jane Austen’s books and have recently finished Persuasian, Pride & Prejudice and last week Sense and Sensibility. I also took some time out to watch the 1995 Film adaptation starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet (loved it!)

Catching up with my running Saturday Sister who has had a knee injury. We have not run together for a couple of months. It was lovely to catch up for a breakfast whilst I was in Brisbane. Look at the design on my coffee – I’ve not seen this before.

Organising new interviews for Season 4 of the Women Living Well After 50 Podcast as well as recording the final episodes of Season 3.

BUTEXCITING NEWS!

The majority of my time during July has been packing! Yes, we are on the move and have sold our apartment and purchased a townhouse in Brisbane. We moved to the Gold Coast 3 years ago and had always intended it to be a temporary move. Yes, we have a beautiful apartment, yes, live by the ocean BUT we are not near our family or friends and we miss that connection. So decision made – we are making it happen and we are excited!

Selling a home is stressful!

  • maintaining a high level of presentation for prospective buyers
  • wondering if you will be able to sell and for the price you want
  • having a contract, then having that contract fall through and starting all over again

We have been busy having open home inspections and combining that with trips to Brisbane to look for a new home. As we have sold our apartment fully furnished we are also shopping for furniture for our new home. It has been stressful yet exciting and that is what I mean bey BE-ing busy in a good way. It is a project Mike and I have been working on together, enjoy each other’s company and finally fingers crossed in two weeks it will all come to fruition.

Lessons learned BE-ing Busy (in a good way)

  • You can be busy and not feel overwhelmed
  • You do need to create boundaries and learn to say ‘no’
  • You do need to take small steps towards the larger goal
  • We all accumulate too many possessions!
  • You need to let go, step back and prioritise what is important
  • You need to be Patient & Flexible- things don’t always go to plan – accept that and revise the plan to make it happen

So that’s been my month of BE-ing and living my WOTY. Next month I will be writing from our new home.

How has your month been? Are you living your WOTY? Have you had any major projects on the go?

P.S. Hot off the press – a late inclusion

I was interviewed recently by Take 5 Magazine to share my thoughts for a feature article about women who are happier in their 50s, 60s and 70s than they were in their 20s. The article was published mid July and as someone who is pro-aging and with the attitude of #nevertooold I was very happy to share my story.

Congratulations on your forthcoming move. Moving is both exciting and stressful plus you have the added work of sourcing new furniture. You have certainly embraced BE-ing busy this month!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric July 30, 2022 at 09:50

Hi Janine, yes life is hectic at the moment but in a good way. Exciting times. x

Fantastic catch up and your news about the move was not quite a surprise but now it’s happening. Go well you two. I admit we have downsizing ahead of us…and phew, it’s good but it also requires a lot of discipline about letting go. We are moving from a 4 bedroom house and all its features to an apartment of some kind. Still to be determined in the new year…and for us, renting is our only option but we are giving ourselves time to become used to the ideas and eventually settle on the “where” back in north west Sydney which we know so well. Congratulations on all of your news and I am taking a blogging break once this link up is done…I shall see you, as they say, “on the other side. Thanks for the link up.

Hi Denyse, I can appreciate the downsizing you will have ahead of you. 4 bedrooms gives you lovely space and even plenty of options for your own space. I’ve been stepping back from blogging and social media and it has done wonders. I couldn’t have managed it all at the moment. Take care and thanks for being part of my blogging world. x

Hi Sue – After decades of living life on full speed, I’m a huge advocate of simple and Unbusy living…BUT…..I don’t think it’s healthy to live slowly all the time. It all comes back to balance – having busy times and having rest. What I love about retirement is that we get to set the pace and the busy times are often because we want to be busy (not because someone has overloaded us). Congrats on the sale and the move – I’m very excited to see your new place and all the lovely new furniture you get to buy.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric July 30, 2022 at 09:47

Hi Leanne, yes it is all about balance (which was one of my previous choices for WOTY). I will send you the photos of our new home and it is exciting buying new furniture. We are looking forward to the move with less than two weeks to go. x

  • Reply Toni Pike July 29, 2022 at 18:52

I’m thrilled to hear about your move, Sue – that is fantastic. Now it will be easy to catch when I visit. Toni x

    • Reply Sue Loncaric July 30, 2022 at 09:46

I thought of you Toni as we are closer to where you usually stay when visiting Brisbane. I’m looking forward to seeing you again. x

  • Reply Natalie July 29, 2022 at 22:35

Hi Sue, Congratulations on your new home purchase, your condo sale and your featured article! I hope your move day goes well. Soon you’ll enjoy being closer to your family and friends for the long term. Thank you for hosting the 2022WOTY linkup. I added my July wrap-up post. Have a wonderful weekend!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric July 30, 2022 at 09:45

Thanks Natalie, it is busy but exciting times and then we have a lovely holiday to Tasmania booked for October. It is all happening!

  • Reply Jo July 30, 2022 at 08:47

Moving is SO stressful. I still cringe at the memory of our last move & the stress of it all (shudders). I think we need to add to this list BE-ing inspirational…which is what that article showed!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric July 30, 2022 at 09:45

Hi Jo, we are taking a slowly, slowly approach to the move. Doing something every day and moving boxes to storage rather than all in one go. You comments are so lovely and I appreciate your friendship. xx

  • Reply Terri Webster Schrandt July 30, 2022 at 09:13

Wow, Sue, how cool to read that article about you! I think as a rule, we are happier as we get into our 50s and beyond. You are such an amazing spokeswoman for advancing health for women over 50! Congrats! Also congrats on selling your apartment to be closer to family. Well done! Thanks for co-hosting the WOTY link party!

    • Reply Sue Loncaric July 30, 2022 at 09:44

Thanks Terri! I was honoured to share my story and hopefully inspire other women to live life in a healthier way. We are looking forward to being closer to family which for us, is important as we age. xx

  • Reply Debbie Harris July 30, 2022 at 18:00

I love your way of separating being busy for the sake of it and living a life at the pace you want to set. So much good news Sue and I’m excited that next time I visit my daughter in Brisbane I can pop over for a cup of tea with you! It’s stressful but you’re doing it together and that’s a great way of sharing the stress but also the fun. I’m so happy with all your news and wish you well. That article is fantastic!! A great WOTY update post.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric July 30, 2022 at 18:10

Yes Deb, I’m enjoying this project even though packing isn’t the most exciting thing it brings us closer to our new home. I would love you to come for a cuppa and will hold you to that! xx

  • Reply Suzanne@PictureRetirement July 30, 2022 at 21:11

Sue, I needed your advice to take small steps toward a larger goal today. Thanks for the reminder to say NO to things that don’t support those goals. Congratulations on the move. I am sure you will miss your beach, but being near family is so much more important at this stage of life. Good wishes for your move.

    • Reply Sue Loncaric July 31, 2022 at 07:11

Hi Suzanne, I always feel uplifted when I receive a comment to say that my post has helped someone. Best wishes for the goal you are working on and thank you for your kind wishes re our move. I am torn as I love the ocean but moving closer to family is right for us at the moment. xx

  • Reply Deborah July 31, 2022 at 14:21

Wow, I’m so out of the loop. I had no idea Denyse was moving back to Sydney next year and now you’re moving. I’m surprised as your spot there at the beach looks lovely but I can understand if it doesn’t feel like ‘home’.

Keen to hear more about your new place in Brissy. Is it near the city?

    • Reply Sue Loncaric August 1, 2022 at 13:25

Hi Deb yes it will be sad to leave the ocean but being closer to family is more important to us at this point in our life. x

I love hearing from you and your comments are important to me
