Recently I asked the question: How do you rate your self worth?
I received many comments from readers who, like me, struggle with appreciating and valuing themselves as unique and special. However, we can all improve the way we view ourselves, so I’d like to share 5 easy ways to help you get started.
5 ways to start appreciating yourself & start thriving
1. The importance of self love
Self love is not wrong but important in accepting who we are. Loving the person we are will shine through to others. We are saying ‘we are worthy and we respect ourselves’.
2. Be authentic – Celebrate your ‘uniqueness’
You are you – unique, wonderful and special. Don’t fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others but celebrate all the qualities that make YOU the individual.
3. Concentrate on what you can offer to others
Remember we all have talents or life experience we can offer to others. Even in small ways we can give back, show kindness and be a role model to family and friends.
4. Value your mind, body and soul
Place value on keeping your mind, body and soul fit and healthy. When we live a healthy and active life, we feel happier and more alive. You deserve to be the best version of YOU.
5. Practice gratitude
Gratitude – this seems to form the basis of a happier life. Feel grateful for all the good things about ourselves and what we have rather than focusing on failings. An Exercise to try: Start raising your self worth by trying this exercise. Write down 10 things that you like about yourself. It might not be easy but include things you are good at or goals you have achieved. Try to see what others see in you. You might surprise yourself and you will definitely feel so much better about yourself.
Below I’ve included a video, Self Appreciation Mantras (Positive Affirmations for Raising Confidence and Esteem) which I found on YouTube. It provides positive mantras to help your appreciate yourself and build self esteem. Isn’t it time to look after yourself?
Can you add to the list of appreciating yourself?

What a lovely post. Should be something we all do and yet is so difficult for most of us…#lifethisweek
Thank you Lydia for your kind words and I agree, many of us really struggle appreciating the person we are – we often need reminders. Have a beautiful week. xx
Sue,
I am glad you’re continuing this message. I’ve been trying to improve in this area and even tried, unsuccessfully, to write the 10 things I like about myself. A work in progress … I’m going to go back to that list and work on it again. Thanks for the nudge!
I’ll share a secret with you Pat, I have difficulty coming up with 10 things but if I just push aside the feeling that I’m boasting or not good enough, I can find them. We can always be a WIP as long as we keep moving forward. Have a beautiful week and thanks for the mention on your post today xx
Great tips. Something I constantly need reminding of. Thank you x
I think we all do, Ness. Have a lovely week xx
Wonderful list! I think that sometimes we (or should I say, I) spend too much time thinking about ourselves and what is less than perfect. If we spend more time thinking about, and doing for, others, as you suggest, I think our self acceptance and self appreciation would reach a higher level.
Hi Candi, I’m the same as many others as well. However, if we do take the focus off ourselves it does help us to feel good about helping others. x
Very good list, Sue. I can add that I focus on the positives and give myself a pat on the back when I complete something that requires efforts.
Hi Natalie! Good for you in celebrating your successes. We need to pat ourselves on the back more don’t we? Have a great week! xx
I’ve been trying very hard in the recent weeks to find the positives and be grateful for them… but I do feel like the effort to find them is harder than the length of boost they give me!
Hi Vanessa, we can’t be positive all the time, we are human with a range of emotions. However, sometimes we just have to try and find one thing that brought us joy even for a few moments. I do hope things improve for you and I wish you a beautiful day. xx
Great list and video, Sue. Thank you for continuing to share these essential reminders~
My pleasure Donna and glad you enjoyed the video. Have a beautiful week xx
Beautiful post Sue. Loved the video and it’s something we need to look at and be reminded of every day. Celebrating our own uniqueness which can often seem so difficult. Such an important topic, thank you for continuing to inspire me.
Yes I saw the video and it was perfect to add into the post. I agree we can’t be reminded enough to love ourselves and celebrate our uniqueness. I love motivating and inspiring others so I’m pleased you find my posts valuable. I also love your writing and feel inspired after I read your posts. Have a great week! xx
I aways come away from reading your blog feeling more positive about life and myself, Sue. Thank you!!

Thanks for making my day with your lovely comments, SSG. Have a beautiful week xx
Thanks for sharing such a positive post.
My pleasure, Stevie and thank you for stopping by to leave me a comment. Have a beautiful day! x
You are such a positive role model Sue and I’m definitely going to try to write my list of 10 things. I really like the point about being unique, it’s something we tend to overlook in our quest for fitting in and being accepted.
I try to be a positive role model Deb although we all have our down days, don’t we. Yes I like to try to remember I am unique and then that helps not to compare myself with others. I’d love to read your 10 things xx
I loved all of these Sue – I think it’s about being kind to ourselves first and then overflowing that onto other people. The more we appreciate who we are and all the blessings in our lives, the happier we are, and the more able we are to invest into the lives of others xx
I agree, Leanne if we feel good about ourselves and treat ourselves with care and kindess, we are more than happy to pass that on to others. x
Focus on what makes you happy. When things are not going well or you’re encountering resistance from others if you do things you love to do it will give you purpose and you’ll appreciate yourself more.
That is certainly the key, Rebecca so I am wishing you a very happy week! xx
Great conversation starter Sue. I used to write 3 things I was grateful for each day and it slipped by the wayside. What I now know is the noticing of and apprecating gratitude has the same effect as writing it down. So, it might be a minute to observe a wonderful sunset and be so glad you go to see it. It is something that can be done anytime and it enriches us.
Thank you for linking up for #lifethisweek. Next week’s optional prompt is a photo-based one: Share Your Snaps 27/8/18. Denyse
I find I’m more inclined to feel gratitude when I see a clear blue sky, or sunset or sunrise, Denyse. It has a more spiritual feel to it than writing down my thoughts. xx
Very good list and reminder. #3 is one we often forget and 10 things is actually quite difficult to write.
I’m not sure why we have difficulty writing things we like about ourselves, Suzy but most of us do. Perhaps we need to look at ourselves as another person and then it might not be as hard. Have a beautiful day and thanks for stopping by to comment. x
Great reminders. Especially gratitude. My husband and I keep a gratitude jar, but sometimes I forget to fill it.
Hi Jennifer, I learned about the gratitude jar from one of your posts – I always remember that! 🙂
I must admit I am finding it very hard to appreciate myself at the moment!! As I approach 50, my body falling apart (literally this week with dislocations) has meant more like sizzling towards 90!! But you always write such great words of wisdom Sue and these prompts are very well received by this old crone today!! I have shared your link on my PainPalsBlog reg feature “Monday Magic Inspiring Blogs for You!”, have a fab BH, Claire x (BTW loving the #MLSTL parties x
Hello Claire and lovely to have you visit. It is hard when you experience pain like you do to really feel like being positive. I’m so pleased that my words helped you and thank you for featuring my blog I was delighted and very appreciative to be mentioned. Have a lovely day. xx
If we don’t like and appreciate ourselves then how can we expect anyone else to? Enjoyed this post!
Exactly, Dee! Have a great day! x
