I don’t know about you but I’ve been inundated with New Year Resolution posts on Social Media, emails and blogs, posts about our word to focus on (and yes I’m doing that this year but I’ve chosen two words), challenges (guilty, I’m doing 30 days Yoga with Adriene in January), sign ups to find a New You, you name it, it has been quite overwhelming.

Each of these approaches and ideas have value, but to me we shouldn’t just wait until New Year to make our resolutions. I’ve written before that I don’t make resolutions now because I feel that there is added pressure to think up something right now and do it without being in the right mindset to actually make things happened.

I’m delighted that Natalie from Natalie the Explorer and Leslie from Once Upon a Time, Happily Ever After have teamed up again to present the Wellness Wednesday monthly link up. They are so organised that they have already come up with the prompts for the next twelve months. I’m excited because it gives me the inspiration and motivate to share tips and ideas with you all about keeping fit, active and fabulous Over 50.

The prompt for January is ‘A Fresh Start’ and yes, it is timely because we are in a New Year, but it also started me thinking that…..

Any day is a good day to start

There are times in our life when we really just feel like wiping the slate clean and starting again. I know I feel that way, do you?

The problem is that we get caught up in the ‘busyness’ of life that we forget that each day is a new opportunity and new chance to make changes. We start to think ‘I’ll start that next week’ or ‘Starting January 1, I’m going to do this’. Timelines are good but sometimes we need to focus more on the journey rather than the finish line.

5 quick ways to make a fresh startI’ve just started reading a book ‘Mini Habits: Smaller Habits, Bigger Results’ by Stephen Guise.

Stephen’s theory is that by forming mini habits rather than trying to attempt too much too soon we can build on a small foundation to achieve what we want from life.  I will share more with you when I’ve finished the book.

So today I want to share with you what I’m going to do to create a Fresh Start.

REMEMBER: TODAY MAY NOT BE THE DAY YOU START but you can start thinking about it and you will know when the time is right for you.

5 ways to make a Fresh Start when the time is right for you.

  1. Know what you want to change and write it down. Accept that you can’t change the past and move on.
  2. Commit to what you want to change or to do – don’t make your ‘Fresh Start’ just words or an idea but commit to making it happen. One of my words for 2019 is Commit so perhaps I can help you by writing about my experiences and ideas on how to commit fully.
  3. Take baby steps rather than trying to achieve it all in one day and learnt to celebrate each step you achieve.
  4. Create a morning ritual to start your day reflecting on your goal and what you can do today to step closer to the finish line. Then practice being present with those thoughts throughout the day.
  5. Cut yourself some slack and recognise stuff happens in life to interrupt our best laid plans. Accept and get back on track.

I love this quote because it makes me stop and think.

      I agree, Donna. That’s really what my seasonal bucket lists are–small things I can do to make certain I am focusing my time and efforts on the things I value.

    Hi Sue, I grabbed onto the idea of mini habits and baby steps. Sometimes the path looks so overwhelming you may not start at all – and that is NOT what we want. Better to take baby steps along the path than not start at all.

    Happy New Year Sue. It’s great to have #MLSTL back. This is a great post. The only thing I would add to your fresh start advice is that when you write down your goal, then write down what you intend to do to make that goal happen. For me that helps to clarify what I need to do and makes it become real. Shared on SM

    I deliberately didn’t buy a dated planner this year – I wanted to continue with my focus from 2018, but find new ways to step it up. To that end I’m doing 3 for 30 – setting 3 small goals/habits that I can follow for 30 days and build on each month.

    Sue I love those five points at the end – I’m mulling over a few life changes atm – we even went to the next level and had a consult with a financial planner to start seriously looking at being ready for retirement when it comes along! I think small steps are so do-able and it’s easier to jump in to change if it doesn’t look too daunting.

    Hi Sue and happy new year! You are so right about taking mini steps…I’m re-evaluating my fitness goals for myself and even small things like doing 30 pushups a day is a win! Thank you for always having informative posts and a positive attitude toward life! 2019 is off to a great start!

    I love the idea of mini-steps of progress toward a goal that can be set at any time, because as you said, every day is an opportunity for a fresh start!     Well said, my wise, dear friend. Any day is a good day to start moving in the right direction of where we want to be in the future. My tough December equated to some emotional eating/wine drinking and not enough days in the gym. I like that you encourage us not to beat ourselves up over missteps or falling off the bandwagon entirely, like I did. Haven’t been in the gym since last year (last week) but hoping today is the day.

      Hi Leslie! I’m a big believer in not beating myself up if I know that things have been out of my control. If I’ve just been lazy then maybe I get annoyed with myself but I also realise that sometimes we just have to be the way we are feeling at any given time.     Everything starts with small steps. Anyone trying to lose weight knows it is easier to focus on losing a lb or two a week rather than the 30 lbs that need to be lost.

    Hello Sue! Thanks for the reminder that every morning is a fresh start–and in fact, any point in the day can be a reset, if you need it. So when stuff happens, as you pointed out that it will, you can take a breath and begin again. I heard an all-or-nothing comparison that has stuck with me. If you fall down one step, you don’t throw yourself down the rest of the staircase, or if you get a flat tire, you don’t slash the other three. Too often when we don’t fulfill our goals 100%, we think we “blew it” and throw in the towel. I’m sure many people are well on their way to giving up on their New Year’s Resolutions. I’m sharing this post as a reminder to all of us that there is another way. Thanks Sue. #MLSTL

The message isn’t difficult to do – baby steps are a much easier way to achieve our goal. We do have to be in the right mindset though that is why I think we shouldn’t focus on a particular day to start – we know when we are ready. xx

    I totally live by the “start thinking about it and you will know when the time is right for you.” For me, that takes off the pressure and I actually seem to make much more progress. I also resist ‘New Year’s Resolutions” because it feels a bit artificial and forced. I try to take every day as a fresh start to let go of anything I felt wasn’t my best the day before. I’m far from perfect, but I’m enjoying life. Thanks for the thought-provoking post!

      I’ve only come around to thinking this way over the last few years, Janet. I used to make my NY resolutions and because I am a driven person I would usually achieve them. However, lately I’ve been thinking that we make resolutions because we are told to rather than because it is the right time to. Great to hear from you and have a fabulous 2019. xx
