T-shirts are not really a big part of my wardrobe. I find it difficult to find a style that suits me and looks presentable enough for a quick dash to the shops. My guest, Jodie from Jodie’s Touch of Style, has shared her ideas on how we can include this basic fashion item and wear it creatively. Jodie also shares her video on 3 T-shirt tips to make it fit, so while you read her ideas, I’m off to see if I can create a t-shirt look I’m happy with.
Jodie proves you can still look stylish without too much fuss. You can connect with Jodie through her website and social media links at the end of the post.
3 ways to wear your T-shirt and look fabulous
I know that society has gotten much more casual in the last years, and who doesn’t love a t-shirt? Yet as a fashion conscious woman, I think it’s still important to look put together and take pride in our appearance. So as much as I love the idea of jeans and a t-shirt, I always feel the need to add some more pizzazz to my outfits.
Therefore I came up with 3 different ways to spruce up the much loved t-shirt. Along with ideas of what to style with our shirts. I also put together a video on how to make your boxy t-shirt fit better.
Add a Topper
There are many toppers available that would work over any kind of t-shirt. In the summer weather, I tend to gravitate towards the kimonos because they are so stylish and lightweight. The best thing about kimonos are their versatility. Even though they look great with jeans and a t-shirt, we’ve shown them with a dressy outfit before on my blog also.
Of course, I always love a jacket too, because a jacket can add the structure that a t-shirt doesn’t usually have. I know many women tend to donate and get rid of their work blazers once they retire; however, I think they can be so versatile for many occasions. We recently broke up our suit pieces to show that they aren’t only for the office.
I think the reason the toppers are a great addition to the t-shirt is because they will take most of the focus away from the shirt and put it on what you are wearing on top of it.
Add Accessories
I’ll never be accused of being a minimalist. Because of this, I will even add fun accessories when I wear a casual t-shirt. And I think it’s like the concept of the topper that I talked about above. Wearing accessories helps change your focus of the outfit.
Most times I will add a necklace or huge earrings if I’m trying to have the focal point be different than the shirt. In the photo above I tried to add the fun with my earrings, bracelet, purse and shoes. I realize that shoes aren’t considered an accessory since they are a requirement for most outfits. But the footwear can add great interest to any outfit.
On the blog we have experimented with all of these ideas. We have worn heels with our jeans and t-shirt. Then we wore scarves with a plain shirt. And then we tried to vary our accessories by using a hat, necklace or purse as the interesting detail.
There have been a couple of times on the blog where I’ve shown how accessories can make an outfit look different. We tried it with solid colors last year and another time recently.
Add a Skirt
To me skirts are the perfect dichotomy to a masculine t-shirt. I realize that not all women wear many skirts anymore. Yet I think it’s a perfect way to spruce up our t-shirts. Especially now with the advent of spandex in materials, a skirt can be just as comfortable as pants. And in the hotter months, they are usually cooler too.
I have to admit, this is one of my favorite tricks when styling a t-shirt. The three of us on the blog have done it many times with normal skirts, with fancy skirts, and then just recently we styled our polo shirts with skirts.
If you happen to be someone who doesn’t love to expose your legs, then the maxi skirts are another perfect concept.
Making Your T-Shirt Fit Better
Luckily there are t-shirts that aren’t as boxy for sale now. However, if you happen to have some shirts that are too big, I’ve come up with 3 ideas to make them look better.
Thanks for joining me on this styling journey.

Great ideas Jodie! I do have a couple of t shirts – I prefer them to be fitted. I would actually go for vest style tops if I had the choice rather than traditional t shirts.
I’m not a traditional t-shirt fan, Linda mainly because I am usually in workout gear and love the racer back. Jodie has given me some ideas though. x
I do too, Linda!! That’s why I love that retailers are making them more “girly” that way.
Thanks!!

GREAT ideas! I’m definitely going to try tucking in my pocket for the asymmetrical line. Anything to take the eye of my pudgy middle 🙂
Oh I’m sure your last sentence is not true, Molly! Jodie has given me some good ideas though, because I’m not really a t-shirt fan. x
I like to refer to it as my fun middle, Molly. Because anything that’s bigger has to be more fun, right??
Thanks for joining in!!

Jodie – I RARELY read fashion blogs or articles because it is just not something on my ‘I care’ list. But today I not only read the post but watched the video. Your engaging voice and simple suggestions caught my attention. Thanks for your ideas — I will certainly share them with my daughter – and perhaps on an occasion that I want to pay attention your ideas will come to mind.
Hi Janet, I’m so pleased you enjoyed Jodie’s post. I like to mix things up and sometimes include a fashion post because I believe it is all about thriving and taking care of ourselves inside and out. Have a great week and thanks for stopping by xx
Thanks for taking the time to watch and read. I know that fashion isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but since we do have to get dressed every day (well, most days, at least…ha ha) it’s nice to have some easy options!!

Oh my gravy, Jodie’s T-shirt wearing tips are so terrific. I am pinning this video and this post all over the place so I can be sure to find it again. Love the idea of tucking the shirt into pockets!! What???!!! And wrapping it around the belt loop. I can surely do those things even with my fumble fingers. Thank you for a great post, Sue and Jodie. You gals rock.
Glad you liked it Leslie and yes I might even try a few ideas. The video was great wasn’t it? Have a fabulous week, my friend xx
Jodie – such great tips. I love the video. You did such a great job and I think I’ll remember all the ways I can make my t-shirt more flattering since I SAW how to do it rather than just reading about it. Good job!
You make a great point Cathy!! It is easier to see these kinds of things done!! That’s why I need to get my butt in gear and make some more videos!!

Hey, Jodie! Always a fun and easy way to look sharp in a classic t-shirt, so many options. I love to throw on some fun accessories to take it up a couple of notches. The front tuck and a third piece like the kimono adds style without being too trendy. I have some new pieces I will be showing soon, all from Amazon and affordable. Enjoyed the post 😀

I love tee shirts too. Sometimes I like to wear them with a lace skirt, or some kind of pants or skirt that is unexpected with a tee shirt.
That’s the funnest way, definitely, Cathi!!

I think I could live in t-shirts and jeans. Jodie’s ideas are sure a lot classier looking! Thanks for a great post with some ideas I can adapt for my own use.
Hi Trisha Faye, as I mentioned in the opening paragraph, I’m not really a t-shire kind of girl but Jodie did give me some good tips to try. 🙂
I’m so glad you liked this Trisha!! It’s always fun to be able to switch things up so you can look better!

That was a really interesting post – and I loved hearing Jodie speaking – it always feels like you know someone more when you hear them rather than just seeing pictures. I wear a lot of tee shirts – I think being tall and fairly straight up and down means that they sit reasonably well on me – people with large busts/hips/short waists etc seem to struggle with them more.
Thanks Leanne! We are all shaped so different, and it makes it challenging depending what we are wearing!!

Hi Jodie and Sue. Yes, I am a t-shirt fan. Nothing more comfy than a tee with jeans. Shared x 4 ♥
They are comfy, Dee and that is so important these days, isn’t it? x
Oh yes, for sure Sue 🙂
